Nor rural sights alone, but rural sounds,
Exhilarate the spirit, and restore
The tone of languid nature
-William Cowper

Every year, around this time I yearn for pastoral sights and sounds.  My yearning for crisp cool days spent outdoors always a few weeks of ahead of Mother Nature.  So Mischief, Mayhem, and I headed to the country this past weekend...for the cool shade and simple pleasures that only the country can provide.

The Jacob Kelley (1780-1874) house, just outside town, is a circa 1820 farmhouse typical of this area of South Carolina.  During the spring of 1865, it found itself in the path of a rather infamous march...and briefly served as a Union headquarters.  Now restored, our visit restored our spirits at the end of a busy week.

My friend and our host, a descendant of the original owner...and Mother to one of Mischief's best buddies.

Back to town.

How lovely! The perfect place to say goodbye to summer and ease into fall!

Beautiful old home full of character and charm. I love the porch that is open on one side—great place for a cup-of and a book.

Truly, I adore such spots that force one to slow down and think how grateful we are to have - electricity, running water and well, the happy color "pink" - It seems those days of tea dyed and vegetable dyed - are symbolic of another era.
I love the images you connect with each and every post.
