In the neighborhood

Prestwood Lake
by local artist Frankie Bush
Artist, patron of the arts, and member

Created in promotion of the
Pine and Lake Garden Club Backyard Garden Tour
benefiting the
Boys & Girls Club of Hartsville, SC

Held this past weekend...the gardens on tour were swarming with admiring visitors.

The afternoon before the tour however, Mischief and I were allowed a sneak peek at our neighbor's garden.

Across the street and across a little bridge...

...follow us this way.

A house I've long admired.  Built in 1934 and situated atop a bluff overlooking Prestwood Lake, the clapboard house is shaded by a canopy of trees and mature specimens that only time can buy.  If you follow this blog, you know I much prefer visual storytelling to that of writing.  So I hope you can enjoy this property as I did...without much chatter.  A peaceful walk through its various garden rooms.

An armillary found in New Orleans and installed at the center of the pea gravel parking court.  Steps to the side lead to a shaded plot and greenhouse.

And through a little gate, stepping stones escort you onto a green lawn.

Designed in 1942 by renowned landscape architect Loutrel Briggs, noted for designing many gardens in Charleston.

His original plans for the nine acre property below.

Brick retaining walls, steps, and garden ornaments define this sunny oasis among the pines and hardwoods.

An arbor planted with yellow Lady Banks rose.

Steps leading to another level of the garden...the bricks radiate out from an old millstone.  Standing guard are English made lead deer which were purchased in Charleston, SC.

Former horse paths criss-cross the property leading you to the rear of the house.

The sweeping back lawn, overlooking the lake.

Thank you Mrs. Lawton for sharing your garden with us.  And thank you Mischief...for suppressing your mischievousness during our tour.

She shall now be known as "Suppressing mischief" to me. What a wonderful spot to come home to. I'd never ever want to leave it.

I feel the same....literally across the street, but a world away. So serene...with the best view in town
