excerpt from the poem The Rainbow Bridge read in its entirety here |
She was the girl in my husband's life when we met. I remember our first meeting well. As I pulled into his drive, there she was...her front paws perched upon the gate of his white picket fence. Curious but friendly. She was quite literally the gatekeeper....the gatekeeper to his heart. I needed to court Scarlett as much as John had been courting me.
Eventually I received her stamp of approval...
...and her blessing.
Once his fancy hunting dog...
...she soon became my princess.
Preferring to retrieve stuffed ducks rather than those in the field.
Our constant companion, even if not invited. Here cutting the cake on our 1st anniversary...do you see her?

As our family grew, her heart grew to include us all
That day...that day that anyone who has ever loved a dog knows will eventually find them has come and gone.
While it snuck up on us, we did have some time to prepare. Time to replace her collar with a necklace Mischief made for her to wear into heaven.
Rest in peace sweet girl...we will miss you until we cross over the other side of the Rainbow Bridge

I should have had my tissues handy for this post. What a wonderful and loving tribute to a special lady!
Elizabeth: she will be missed by all except for the squirrels in our neighborhood. Hope Belle grows quickly to pick up the slack
So sorry; it really is a loss - we have Labs and they are absolutely members of the family. We had a chocolate, Molly, who lived to 14. Our old man, Duncan, is 11 and slowing down quickly but the addition of Gus, 1 year this month, has given him back a spark we thought was out. I firmly believe Labs are the best dogs.
My condolences,
Phyllis
She was lucky to have such a special family. What a beautiful post.
Phyllis: I never thought I could love a lab...I grew up with cocker spaniels. I mean...labs are big, smart and don't have curls or anything ha.
Then I met Scarlett. She changed my mind and heart
oh i am so sorry to hear that Scarlett has gone. she was a beautiful sweet girl, remember her getting in the pool at John's when we were there for Christmas one year. Thinking of all of you!
Candy: she always missed that pool. She would occasionally sneak off and find a pool in the neighborhood and take a dip. And skip home soaking wet
Bless her heart. Miss Scarlett needs to have a proper book. I just want to illustrate it because I feel the love she garnered from not just you but all that came in contact with her.
Dogs do that. They steal our hearts.
I was so happy to be reunited after our weekend away.
Bentley literally ran into my arms.
Dogs do that.
That hand made collar for her trip to heaven is priceless.

Sending Bentley a big hug! My nephew (8 years old) is so excited that Scarlett can "hang out with dogs from the 1700's in heaven." Thank goodness for children...I needed the laugh
Oh Jennifer, I'm so sorry to hear about Scarlett. These "fur children" are such important members of our family and play such a special roles in their our lives. They give so much. I'm glad she had such a wonderful life with a beautiful family. Sending you lots of hugs this morning. XO
thank you Jeanne....I miss my "fur child"
A beautiful tribute...the photos are priceless and tell such a loving story. As for the neighborhood squirrels, I read in "Dog Heaven" that God has a sense of humor and makes squirrel shaped biscuits for our dogs when they are in heaven. This sweet book was given to us by our wonderful vet when M's dog passed away. A copy is on its way to you and your family.

Margaret: Dog Heaven was recommended by another friend as well ha...so thankful for all of our dog loving friends.
I believe that if we are VERY, VERY good, we get to go where all the dogs go and we meet up again with every dog we have owned and loved.
I'm sorry, Jennifer. And don't blame you for taking some time off.
You just won the Oscar for blog posts. That was awesome. Great tribute to the cute Scarlett!
"You like me...you really really like me"
My Oscar speech...a la Sally Field
thank you Gail. It's been a long week.
Oh, I hate that I've been out of touch the last several days.... now I am sitting here in bed sick and crying! I am so sorry about the loss of your sweet Scarlett. It is obvious what a special role she played in your beautiful family. What a lovely tribute.
I'm so sorry about Scarlet. That was the sweetest post ever and made me cry about your sweet dog baby. Thinking about y'all.
I'm so very sorry Jennifer. Thinking of you and your family.
That is one of the sweetest tributes to a dog I've ever seen. It hit very close to home and brought tears to my eyes. We lost our sweet chocolate boy Chester in 2010 and I still miss him. There is nothing in the world like the love of a big, goofy lab. Scarlett was a lucky girl to have such a wonderful family. I saw this posted on Lucy's page and I'm so glad I clicked on it. I'm sorry for your loss Jennifer.
Take care,
Neill
Thank you Neill, wonderful to hear from you...but not of your late lab. Hope Chester and Scarlett are playing together in Dog Heaven!
Hello, I just found your blog and read this heartwarming post. I know how it feels -- we lost one of our beloved dogs in January and it was so difficult. We still cry when we think of her. Scarlett was a beautiful dog, and I'm sure she is in dog heaven where she is retrieving and running and very happy.
Claudia
Claudia, thank you. Nothing more comforting than hearing from others who have lost their canine family members. A lost hard to verbalize
I found your blog through Loi's post…I just read this post and now I can't quit crying! It was the sweetest thing ever!! Our sweet Rosie is getting on up there in years and I am dreading this day! Our children have literally grown up with her! Thanks for sharing this, though!
thank you Carolyn. We've read Dog Heaven, a thoughtful gift from a friend...amazing how a great story can be so comforting to children. They are now so excited about the great time Scarlett is having with her friends and God's special dog treats
